Objectives/Overview
This course will provide an overview of the history, theory, practices and challenges of international financial institutions (IFIs). In the lecture, IF Is cover the International Monetary Fund (IMF), World Bank (including the International Financial Corporation [IFC]), Asian Development Bank (ADB), Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), African Development Bank (AfDB), and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD). In addition the lecture discusses the roles of the recently established ASEAN+3 Macroeconomic and Research Office (AMRO) and the Japanese bilateral agencies (Japan Bank for International Cooperation [JBIC] and Japan International Cooperation Agency [JICA]).
Experts from these IFIs will provide lectures in many cases. These experts include the heads of the IMF Office, World Bank Office, ADB Office, IDB Office, and AfDB Office in Tokyo. This is expected to provide students with first-hand information on IFIs. Also experts from JICA and JBIC will provide their views on IFIs. At the end of the course, students are expected to understand the major roles of IFIs.
Students are expected to attend all lectures, participate actively in class, produce a lecture note for the session of the student’s choice, and write a term paper on any of the lecture topics.

Each student will be assessed as follows:
・20% - class attendance and contribution to class discussion
・20% - production of a lecture note
・40% - written term paper (individual)
・20% - term paper presentation with powerpoint
