　The course will be taught in English and examined by means of a take-away essay examination. Students completing the course will acquire a good understanding of the role of governments in the economies of advanced industrial nations, with particular emphasis on microeconomic interventions in business. Discussion of market failure and state failure, regulation and deregulation, will be developed in the context of issues such as antitrust policy, financial and governance regulation, political corruption, policies for airlines, health, agriculture, electricity, and the evidence on the relative efficiency of state-owned and privatized enterprises in a variety of countries.

　No prior knowledge is assumed other than a basic knowledge of economics. It is helpful to know some law or political science, or about some foreign economy, because of the international comparisons, but neither of these is essential.
