Objectives/Overview

Taking cases of negotiations which the government of Japan (GOJ) conducted with a foreign counterpart or counterparts in an area of trade, economy and energy, participants would learn why GOJ had started the negotiation, how concerned officials defined issues and goals they aimed and to what extent they could achieve them, what leverages were prepared to persuade the counterpart or counterparts and so on.

Schedule

Followings are candidates of negotiations to be studied; 1 , Structural Impediments Initiatives (SII) between Japan and the U.S.; 2, Import diversification Policy of the Republic of Korea (ROK) and its abolition; 3, Negotiations to freeze nuclear weapons of North Korea and to establish Korean Peninsula Energy Development Organization (KEDO); 4,APEC (Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation); 5, Bilateral negotiations between Japan and People Republic of China (PRC) on textile products, and leek, mushroom and rush

Teaching Methods

Lectures would be conducted about background of each negotiation, and followed with class discussion over aspects such as a goal of the negotiation, identifying issues and stakeholders, leverage, and the achieved and evaluation.

Grading

Class participation and contribution, examination's results have equal weight.
