Background and aim

Many entities have done various efforts for enhancing the effectiveness of ocean governance of Japan under the framework given by UNCLOS and Basic Act on Ocean Policy and related legal instruments.

The followings are two of important elements for improving the ocean governance.

  • - Enrichment of scientific knowledge of oceans;
  • - Generation and promotion of business which deal with development, use and conservation of oceans.

The symposium focuses on ocean-related investigation and research business, in which the two elements intersect. It is a challenge to grasp as widely as possible the current situation of ocean-related investigation and research activities done sharing responsibilities among various entities including industrial, governmental and academic ones in Japan and overseas, and to have a perspective of possible future of the business.
