“Toward a More Balanced Growth Path for Thailand”

Dr. Chalongphob Sussangkarn, Former Finance Minister of Thailand

Since the 1997 East Asian economic crisis, the Thai economy has become very dependent on the export sector as the main engine of growth. As a result, the global financial crisis led to sharp export declines and negative growth for Thailand in 2009. While export and growth have bounced back in 2010, it is very important for Thailand to generate a more balanced growth path; both in terms of the growth drivers and also to ensure better income distribution. The talk will focus on ways that this can be done, in particular the role of investment. Regional cooperation will also be discussed. This can deepen linkages to Thailand's neighbors in the Greater Mekong Subregion(GMS) and help broaden the geography of growth.
