We imagine the future every time we brush our teeth, go to work, or set some money aside for a rainy day. To imagine futures radical possibilities for what the decades ahead might bring one must summon the futures into the present. Artifacts from the futures provide a critical and contemplative lens from which to explore probable, plausible, and preferable aspects of what might lie ahead.
This workshop is intended to spur policy makers, business leaders, academics, and the general public to think about the implications of big data for science and society and raise their awareness on possible and desirable future scenarios. This workshop is a hands-on, participant-driven event, in which participants will actively engage each other in a facilitated discussion. As an output of this workshop, participants will create design ideas for 'postcards from the future' which are thought-provoking, puzzling, and trigger discussions on the implications of big data for science and society. A selection of postcards will be distributed to movers and shakers, policy makers, politicians, and business people in Japan and around the world.
The Graduate School of Public Policy at the University of Tokyo, Tokyo University of the Arts, and The Hawaii Research Center for Futures Studies at the University of Hawaii will co-sponsor this unique event in Tokyo.
歯を磨く、仕事に行く、将来のために貯金をする…私たちは常に、未来のことを想像しています。何十年先の将来がもたらす根本的な可能性を想像するためには、私たちは「未来」を「現在」として取り込まなくてはなりません。未来の「産物」は、重要で考えさせられるレンズを私たちに与えてくれ、それにより私たちは未来に何が起こりうるかを探求することができます。
このワークショップは、政治家、民間企業、学者、そして一般の人々に対し、科学や社会のビッグデータが何を意味するかを考えさせ、将来起こりうる筋書きについて気づかせることを目的としています。このワークショップは実践的で参加者主体のものであり、参加者は積極的に議論に参加できることでしょう。このワークショップの終了時には、参加者たちは「未来からのポストカード」のデザイン案を生み出すことになります。それらは示唆に富み、科学や社会に関するビッグデータが意味するものに関する議論のきっかけとなるはずです。どの「ポストカード」を選択するかは、日本及び世界中の有力者や政治家、民間企業に委ねられます。
東京大学公共政策大学院、東京藝術大学、ハワイ大学未来研究センターもこのユニークなイベントを共催しています。
