Workshop Report
Knock Down the Wall and Make It Bridge
I am Yoshinobu WATANABE, a freshman at GraSPP from this April, and now preparing for studying in Peking University as an exchange student through CAMPUS Asia program.
I would like to introduce general aspects of this workshop and my thoughts on the workshop by relating an episode with a student of Peking University.
The 11 students of the University of Tokyo visited Seoul National University (SNU) and Peking University (PKU) for five days in total, where we enjoyed the warm hospitality extended by both of them.
Arriving at Seoul University, we were greeted with hot coffee and delicious sandwiches. After the lively discussion with the students and the excellent lecture given by Professor Woosik MOON, they treated us to dinner at the restaurant in the university.
Also in Beijing, the students of PKU guided us to a high-class restaurant, famous for its Peking duck, and then also took us to Forbidden city and Jingshan Park Coal Hill.
After visiting Forbidden City and Jingshan Park Coal Hill, some students kindly took me back to my hotel, which is located in two hours' walk from there. However temperatures began to drop and was getting windy on the way as the night falls. One of the students has forgotten his coat and looked shivering in cold. So I asked him to return home or put on my coat, but he was worried about me instead and said, “I wear thick layer of fat, so don't worry.”
The next day, I was very sorry that he seemed to have caught a cold. I asked him several times if he got a cold but he always replied, “I'm fine. Don't worry”. His kindness relieved me but at the same time I felt there was still a sort of a wall between him and me.
However, as we told each other jokes or about our futures, the wall gradually tilted down. At last, when we were about to return to Japan, he said to me, smiling “I caught a cold thanks to you.” The change of his words delighted me and left a strong impression.
As such, when I study abroad, I want to create close relationships like this with as many people as possible to express candid opinions from each country's point of view. I wish to knock down walls and make them bridges of friendship.
CAMPUS Asia Workshopを経て ―壁を倒して架け橋に―
私は、東京大学公共政策大学院4月入学予定の渡邊芳信と申します。CAMPUS Asia Programの一環として、北京大学への派遣候補生として推薦を受け、現在、今年の8月末からの1学期間の交換留学に向けて準備を進めております。
今回は、派遣候補生の立場から、本ワークショップ先で出会った北京大学のLi君（仮名）との何気ないやりとりを紹介する事を通し、本ワークショップの雰囲気や、私が留学へ向けて抱いた思いなどをお伝えしたいと思います。
私達、東京大学の学生11名は、3月9日～13日までの合計5日間、北京大学・ソウル大学校を訪れ、学生そして先生方と交流致しました。その際、学生達・先生方から最大限のおもてなしを受けました。
ソウルでは、まず、温かいコーヒーとサンドウィッチで出迎えて頂き、ディスカッションの後は、大学構内のレストランにて伝統料理を振舞って頂き、ファカルティーハウスにも泊めて頂きました。
また、北京でも、現地で有名な北京ダック店にお連れ頂き、大学構内で昼食をご馳走してもらい、また故宮や景山公園まで案内して頂きました。
Li君もまた、その一人として、北京ダック店では、四角く包んで食べる北京ダックをクレープのように巻いて食べようとしていた私に丁寧に何度も巻き方を教えてくれ、また故宮・景山公園では、プロのガイドさんも顔負けの深い含蓄とケインコスギよりも流暢な日本語で案内してくれました（日本語を初めてまだ半年くらいというから驚きです）。
そして、故宮・景山公園に行った帰り、Li君が、私をホテルに送ってくれることになりました。その時はもう夕方になっていて北京の気温は氷点下に達し、凍てつく風が吹いていました。小太りのLi君は「僕は太っているから大丈夫です」と言っていたものの、見るからに寒そうな恰好でした。早く帰って温まるよう何度もお願いしましたが、心優しいLi君は私を心配して結局歩いて2時間程のところにあるホテルまで送り届けてくれました。
翌日、Li君に会うと、申し訳ないことに、案の定、風邪気味のようでした。その日は、学生達とディスカッションを行い、また、北京大学のキャンパスを回りました。その間私は何度か「大丈夫？」と尋ねていましたが、彼の返答は変わらず「大丈夫です」でした。
しかし、お互いの将来の話や万国共通の冗談を交わすうちに、壁は次第に無くなっていき、そしてついに別れ際、Li君は「渡邊さんのせいで風邪をひいちゃったよ」と言ってくれたのでした。その彼の言葉の変化は、私にとってとても印象深く、とても嬉しいものでした。
留学中、Li君との間で少しでも築く事が出来たような本音を言い合える関係を出来るだけ多く創り、ゆくゆくはお互いの国の立場・視点から率直に意見を交わしていけるようになりたい、壁を倒して架け橋にしていきたいと思います。
