Cost of Living
Tokyo has the highest cost of living in the world. Average monthly expenses of an international student who lives in Kanto Region is estimated as 154,000JPY(including tuition fee) (JASSO data 2012). It must be a little more expensive in Tokyo. Please guesstimate your monthly living expenses and expected income, and prepare well for Tokyo life.
東京の物価
日本は世界の中でも物価の高い国の一つであり、東京の物価は日本で一番高いと言われています。関東地方に住む外国人留学生の１ヶ月の生活費（学費含む）は約154,000円（2012年JASSO調べ）、東京23区内ではもう少し高いと推測できます。主な生活必需品などの価格を調べ、東京での暮らしを計画してみてください。
Student Discount for Commuter Pass
If you are a regular student or an exchange student, you can purchase your train pass to the university with discounted rate. Please ask at the railway company for more detail. The student certificate which you need to show the railway company when you buy the pass will be distributed by the Graduate School Office at the Guidance for new students.
通学定期券の学生割引
公共政策大学院に正規学生および特別聴講生（交換留学生）として在籍する学生は、割引された通学定期券が購入できます。購入に必要な学割証は大学院係から発行されます。ただし、科目等履修生は学割を利用できません。
The housing situation
Apartments around this Hongo Campus, usually a dwelling for one（about 20 square meters） which has own kitchen, shower room, toilet should be 80,000JPY for a month.
A dwelling for two (about 40 square meters) usually costs 130,000JPY for a month. It should have two rooms and kitchen, shower room, toilet.
When you sign the contract, in a first place, you are required to pay a deposit of approximately 3 or 4 month's rent. It includes a damage deposit, key money, and commission.
You will also need to find a guarantor. About 60% of students of University of Tokyo live in private apartments.
住宅事情
本郷キャンパス付近での家賃の相場は、一人暮らしの場合で（台所、風呂、トイレ付個室20平方メートル程度）月額約8万円、夫婦での暮らしで（ベッドルーム2つ、台所、風呂、トイレ付40平方メートル程度）月額約13万円ほどです。また、契約するときに、敷金・礼金・仲介手数料・家賃等、家賃の3～4カ月分程度のお金と連帯保証人が必要となります。東京大学の留学生のうち約60%が民間宿舎・アパートに入居しています（2012年度状況）
Illness or Injury
The Health Service Centers consists of internal medicine, neuropsychiatry, otology and dentistry. Anyone belonging to the university can visit there to receive diagnosis and treatment for illnesses and injuries, as well as for health counseling, first aid and other services, regardless of the department to which he or she belongs. Basically, consultation is free and you need to pay for a medicine charges only.
If you wish to visit the University of Tokyo Hospital, please ask the Health Service Center to provide a letter of introduction for you, otherwise you will have to pay additional 5,250JPY as special healthcare expenditure.

病気・けがをしたら？
本郷保健センターでは、内科、歯科口腔外科、耳鼻咽喉科、精神科の診療や健康相談を行っています。費用は「保険センター学生診療料金」制度により、薬代程度の負担で済みます。
東京大学医学部付属病院等に行く場合には、あらかじめ保健センターで紹介状をもらってください。紹介状なしで調節病院へ行くと、医療費とは別に、特定療養費5,250円が必要となります。

Precautions against Earthquakes
Earthquakes occur frequently in Japan. You should always take precautions against earthquakes.
You can prepare by keeping the following items in your Emergency Backpack: water (or juices, or other beverages), food for two or three days (hard, dry crackers, canned food, etc.), a can opener, medicine, a first-aid kit, a flashlight, and a radio with new batteries.
In case of an Earthquake
Turn off any electric or gas burners. Also turn off the main gas valves.
Open at least one window or door to create an exit.
If you are indoors during an earthquake, do not go outside as there is the danger of being hit by falling debris.
If you are outdoors, move to an open and safe area, etc.

地震の時は？
日本は地震の多い国なので、普段から地震に備えておくことが大切です。
水、２～３日分の食料、缶切、薬、救急箱、懐中電灯、ラジオ、電池等は避難袋に入れていつでも持ち出せるようにしておくと便利です。
いざ地震が来たら、
火を消し、ガスの元栓など火元を止める
出口を確保する、
慌てて外に飛び出さない、落下物に注意する
地域の広域避難場所へ避難する 等
地震について正しい知識を持ち、準備をしておくようにしましょう。

身の危険を感じたら、すぐに警察(110)へ連絡してください。
事故や家事等にあったときは、警察と消防署(119)へ連絡してください。
学内にいる時は、学内緊急連絡先である警備室(03-5841-4919)へ連絡し、いずれの場合も留学生担当へ連絡をしてください。
