"Fermi Estimation and Thinking Skill workshop"

●Introduction and recommendation

Mr. HOSOYA Isao, a business consultant and famous for books such as "Train your Raw Intelligence" and "There is no stopping the aging of the company", will open small discussion group on "Fermi Estimation and Thinking Skill".
"Fermi Estimation" is something like an estimation by clearly identifying one's assumptions, dimensional analysis and approximation, on data difficult to get by usual statistical ways.
An example of "Fermi estimation", generally attributed to Fermi himself, is "How many piano tuners are there in Chicago?" Can you answer this question?
I think this workshop is helpful to train your flexible ways of thinking and for your Job-hunting. Please feel free to join this workshop.

No preparation is required in advance. (Just bring yourself!)
The workshop is quite interactive, including presentations and discussions among groups

●Overview

♢"How many golf balls are there in the world?"
♢"How much should you charge to wash all the windows in Seattle?"
These questions have been used for job interviews at management consulting firms, and IT companies such as Google and Microsoft to check the job applicants' thinking skills.
The objective of this workshop is for the participants to develop basic thinking and reasoning skills through these exercises. You will be able to learn both basic principles and practical knowledge for thinking, through lectures and individual/group exercises.
You will also be able to understand what kinds of skills are necessary in current business, and they will be useful your recruiting activities as well.

Isao Hosoya
Business Consultant / Author

Mr. Hosoya is a business consultant, author, and speaker. He is currently consulting fellow at Qunie Corporation. He joined Ernst and Young consulting Japan in 1996, after working for Toshiba as a nuclear engineer for eight years, and has been consulting for over fifteen years.
Mr. Hosoya's main focus areas in consulting are business process re-engineering, and strategy development in such areas as new product development, supply chain management, and IT management. He also has expertise and experiences in global ERP implementation, post merger integration, project management, and change management in global projects.
Mr. Hosoya is the author of seven Japanese books on problem-solving, including the bestselling "Jiatama-ryoku wo kitaeru" (Train your "raw intelligence"). He also translated four English books including "Trusted Advisor" (David Maister et al) into Japanese. He has been delivering a number of speeches and seminars regarding his books, targeted for corporations, students and other organizations.
He has been teaching at Thai-Nichi Institution of Technology in Bangkok for two years.
Mr. Hosoya graduated from the University of Tokyo in 1988, with B.S. in nuclear engineering.

公共政策大学院教授　関啓一郎

「会社の老化は止められない」、「地頭力を鍛える」などの著書で有名なビジネスコンサルタントの細谷功氏を囲んでの勉強会で、 「フェルミ推定と思考力」について扱います。
「フェルミ推定」とは、調査が難しいデータについて、いくつかの手掛かりを元に推論して概算を出すことです。 フェルミ自身が、シカゴ大学の学生に対して出題したとされる「シカゴには何人のピアノの調律師がいるか？」という問いが有名です。 皆さん、推定できますか？
柔軟な思考トレーニングになり、また就職活動にも役立つと思います。 討論は英語で行いますが、英語が苦手な人も歓迎しますので、英語学習も兼ねて参加してください。

●参加に当たって

自由参加です。参加に際しての事前準備は一切不要ですが、使用言語は英語です。
本勉強会は双方向を原則とし、個人・グループ演習とその発表やディスカッションを中心とします。

●概要

♢「世界にゴルフボールはいくつあるか？」
♢「シアトル中のガラスを全部洗うのにいくらかかるか？」
こういった質問がコンサルティング会社やマイクロソフト、グーグルといったIT系の会社での採用面接試験で、受験者の思考力を試すのに用いられてきました。
本勉強会の目的は、こうした質問を演習することでベースとなる思考力を身につけることです。 実際にビジネスの現場でこうしたスキルがどのように必要とされるのかもビジネスの現場での経験も踏まえてお伝えします。
冒頭のような質問が「なぜ」採用面接で問われ、どんなスキルが評価されるのかについても理解でき、就職活動に対しての心の準備にも役立てられるでしょう。

●講師略歴

細谷功（ほそや・いさお）
ビジネスコンサルタント、（株）クニエコンサルティングフェロー

1988年東京大学工学部卒業。株式会社東芝を経て、アーンスト&ヤング、キャップジェミニ等のコンサルティング会社にて戦略策定や業務／IT改革に従事する。 近年は問題解決や思考力に関する講演やセミナーを企業や大学等で実施。
2012年より計４期、泰日工業大学（TNI）にて日本のビジネスやコンサルティングに関する講義を担当。 著書に『地頭力を鍛える』（東洋経済新報社）、『会社の老化は止められない～未来を開くための組織不可逆論』（亜紀書房）等。
