【About the guest speaker】
Mark Caprio is professor in the College of Intercultural Communication, Rikkyo University in Tokyo, Japan.
He earned his doctorate from the University of Washington in Korean history in 2001. v In 2009 he published Japanese Assimilation Policies in Colonial Korea, 1910-1945 (U. Washington Press).
More recently he co-edited a volume titled Japan as the Occupier and the Occupied (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015).
Caprio is now drafting a manuscript tentatively titled “Korea’s post-liberation dregs of Japanese colonial rule.”
In addition to modern Korean historical issues his research interests also consider peaceful resolution of contemporary Korean crises. A key term he has been developing is “collective responsibility,” a shared responsibility that a diverse range of states must accept to bring to the Northeast Asian region peaceful resolution of historically troubling problems. Caprio has held visiting research posts at both Harvard University (2002-03) and UCLA (2012-13).
