“Energy Security and a New Development of Energy Business”

Objective

The global supply and demand of energy is now shifting over to a new stage of higher crude oil prices, confronted by major changes in the energy environment such as the accident at the Fukushima No.1 nuclear power plant, the stalled negotiations on global warming which has been lowered in the priority, the rapid expansion of energy demand in Asia, and the emergence of shale gas. The governments of the leading countries have been responding to the situation by shifting the focus of their policies ever more on energy security issues.

Likewise in energy business, based on such changes in the energy markets government policies, adaptations quickly responding to the new environment is essential in areas such as strategies, business models, organization, systems framework, human resources development in order to operate businesses in the emerging countries where tremendous growths are expected. Energy business of Japan, which is now at a great turning point, is also expected to make such shifts smoothly and actively.

Based on the recognition above, the purpose of this international symposium is to first discuss and analyse the changing international energy environment and the responding policies to share the awareness of the challenges ahead, and in the latter half of the symposium, by taking the “smart community projects” as an example of a new business model anticipated to develop in the future, discuss in detail on business strategies and organization we must pursue while extracting implications for future energy business.
