Earned Ph.D. in 1992 from Kyoto University. Served as Associate Professor at Yokohama University (1993–2000) and Visiting Researcher at Freiburg University (1995–96). Has served as Advisory Board member of the academic journal Biology and Philosophy since 1998 and East Asian Science, Technology and Society since 2010.

Major Publications
His main interests are science and technology studies including social aspects of AI and robotics, comparative history of reception of evolutionary theor and cultural effects in the history of science and technology in Japan. He was also engaged in the relation between experts and local people in the evacuation areas of Fukushima Daiichi nuclear desaster. He published several journal papers and books.
