Objectives/Overview

Politics have had a significant impact at various levels on how people interact with the environment. However, environmental politics as an academic field is yet to be developed. This course will focus on the political dimension of natural resources and environmental management with an emphasis on approaches and methods, and aims to offer students an in-depth understanding of policy questions. With active student participation, the seminar will be a collaborative forum to investigate the nature of natural resources and environmental politics.

Teaching Methods

The seminar will consist of mini-lectures, discussions based on the readings, and student presentations. Most copies of the readings for each week will be distributed in class a week ahead. Detail plan along with the reading list will be distributed on the first day.

Class Participation 40%
Final Memo 20%
* Class presentation will be evaluated according to the following criteria: (1) understanding of the reading assignment, (2) clarity of presentation and effectiveness of facilitation, and (3) originality of comments and questions. It is particularly important for each student to strive for asking good questions.

Notes on Taking the Course

This is not a one-way lecture course. Active participation by the students in discussion, paper presentation is expected.
