Objectives

The objective of this course is to analyze and understand the major characteristics of Japan’s post-war foreign policies—commonalities and differences throughout the period that emerged from the development of international relations and restrictions inherent to Japan’s past history, geopolitical conditions and location.

Schedule

We first share the views on recent development of international relations, changing roles of states in managing the conflicts of national interests and establishing cooperation in various fields, such as national and regional security, economy & trade, and cultural exchanges. We touch upon growing roles played by non-state actors as well as ordinary citizens that gave rise to the importance of public diplomacy. We focus on specific events to see to what extent the basic characteristics of Japan’s foreign are reflected.

Teaching Methods

The whole course will be given in English. Lectures and instructions will all be given in English. We use mostly English documents and reading materials. Q & A will also be conducted in English. Students’ active participation is vital.

Grading

Contribution to the discussion in class is essential, providing 40 % of evaluation. There will be a written examination at the end of the semester, which will be the basis for 60 % evaluation.
