Description
The main focus of this course will be the law and the legal system of the World Trade Organization. However, public international law issues relating to investment and finance will also be touched upon.
The course consists of the following segments: the concept of international economic law; developments of international economic law; the organization of the WTO; basic principles of the WTO; trade remedies (anti-dumping, countervailing duties, safeguards); developing countries and the WTO; regional integration and the WTO; general exceptions; trade and non-trade matters (e.g., environment); settlement of investment disputes; and international monetary law.
There is no textbook for this course. The lecturer, however will often refer to the following books:A. Kotera & J. Nakagawa (eds.), Basic Economic Treaties (Tokyo: Yuhikaku, 2002) (Japanese); M. Matsushita et al. (eds.), Casebook on GATT/WTO Law (Tokyo: Yuhikaku, 2000) (Japanese).
Evaluation will be made based on a written examination at the end of the course. Please note that the examination will be scheduled within the examination period of the Law School. Class participation will also be considered.
