[Aim]
Acquisition of familiarity with basic theories concerning the NPO, NGO and voluntary sector and overview of the latest relevant research.

Readings of selected materials, lectures and presentations by students.

[Content]
The following issues will be covered in throughout the course:
- Why do NPOs exist? How do they differ from for-profit organizations and administrative agencies?
- Why is there an international interest in the role of NPOs have NPOs attracted world wide attention for their roles?
- What are the scale of economic activities, industrial structure and revenue structure of NPOs?
- What are the features of Japanese NPOs as seen from an international comparative perspective?
- What are the motives of individuals and businesses for making donations or volunteering?
- How are NPOs managed?
- What are the problems arising from laws and taxation? How should they be addressed?

[A Note on the References]
It is recommended that those students with no previous knowledge of the field should read Yamauchi (2004) in advance while those with a background in Economics should read Yamauchi (1997) in advance. Parts of Salamon ed. (2002) and Anheier and Ben-Ner (2003) will be read in class.

[Evaluation]
Students will be evaluated on the basis of presentations and essays.
