Backed by her remarkable economic achievements, China has been giving a great impact on peace and prosperity in the East Asian region including Japan. As for her future, however, politics rather than economy seems to be more influential. The basic policy to give the highest priority to economic development is politically decided by one-party system of Chinese Communist Party. This politics is now in the process of transformation penetrated by market mechanism of economy. The direction of such transformation might affect to a great degree the future of the East Asian region and Japan where trends for the regional cooperation and integration have begun to gain momentum.

This lecture attempts to address the political process from the establishment of one-party dictatorship to its transformation while taking into consideration Chinese economy and society and international relations surrounding China. Furthermore, China's future scenario will be examined.
