Theory and Practice of International Law

Faculty

Y. Onuma

Description

We will examine the relationship between international law on the one hand, and cultures and civilizations on the other, from various perspectives including international relations, cultural studies and international politics. In concrete, we will deal with such questions as (1) the universality versus relativity of human rights, (2) the relationship between religions and international law, (3) domestic and international laws on the world heritage, (4) geographical distribution of the members of the UN Security Council and judges of the ICJ, and other subjects related to the problems on cultures and/or civilizations and international law.

From April through July 2007, we will read materials provided by Onuma to the participants of the seminar. We may have a mini-camp for further studies in August. From October 2007 through January 2008, the participants are expected to give his/her paper dealing with one of those subjects.

The first seminar which will survey the entirety of the seminar will be held on 11 April 2007 .
