Description

< Aims of Lecture >

The nonprofit (NPO) and nongovernmental (NGO) organizations play a significant role not only in the global issues such as poverty, internal conflicts, environment, but also in internal affairs such as aging society, childcare issues. However, the study on these nonprofit and non-governmental organizations is still on the developing stage. The study on nonprofit organizations is indeed one of the most promising study areas. In this lecture, we will grasp the theoretical framework to analyze and understand the current status of this nonprofit sector with the international point of view. In the first place, we will overview the most common nonprofit theories both in economics and sociology disciplines. We will also review the economic scale of the nonprofit sector with John’s Hopkins ’ international comparative study. Then, from the practical point of view, we will study nonprofit management and program evaluation. Finally to understand its emerging key role, we will pay attention to the role of the international NGOs which influence international institutions such as the World Bank and the United Nations, etc.

I would raise the fundamental question. “How the nonprofit and non-governmental organizations contribute to revitalize the society? What kind of the functions the nonprofit sector has in resource distribution? And, how does the sector preserve its legitimacy?” There are no clear answers to those questions. The nonprofit organizations without unified evaluation mechanism that is equivalent to the market mechanism or election tend to fall into inefficiency and wrong direction intentionally or unintentionally, while many of others contribute to the society. To verify their legitimacy and effectiveness, we need to tackle with an issue of the evaluation and accountability of those organizations.
