Description

This lecture is intended to provide a comprehensive picture of the European Union (EU), a complicated but important actor in the international arena. In so doing, it attempts to show vivid and stimulating aspects of EU studies, as well as the problematique surrounding the existent EU (Studies).

More specifically, it will be structured as follows:
- introducing the significance and scope of the EU (Studies)
- depicting in details the historical processes of European integration, with some emphasis on the role of political leadership of various actors
- analyzing the nature of the post EMU EU as a political entity, as well as its democratic quality
- exploring the problematique the EU has in the aftermath of the 2004-7 enlargement & the 2005 rejection of the constitutional treaty in France and the Netherlands
- considering the relevance of the EU for the current world order, especially in relation to globalization as well as the transatlantic relations
- speculating the implications that the EU may well have for legal & political ideas, & for social science methodology, drawing on the concepts such as sovereignty & subsidiarity.
