The Griffith Asia Institute, Griffith University, in collaboration with the Qld State Government and Peking University, have established a fund to develop a future-orientated partnership between Australia and China. This partnership will focus on how the region will evolve in the next 20 years and how this evolution can be shaped in our interests. The partnership includes three linked initiatives: an annual Leader's Lecture on Asia's future; an annual Second-Track Dialogue on Asia's Future; and an Emerging Leaders' Dialogue for graduate students incorporating fellowships and student exchanges.

The second Emerging Leaders' Dialogue is scheduled to be held 27-29 September 2010 in Brisbane. Participants in the Emerging Leaders' Dialogue will include a select group of graduate students from Australia, China and the Asia Pacific region. The aim of the Dialogue is to encourage forward thinking and forge links between our region's future leaders. Participants will also have discussions with representatives from government agencies, media and business. In 2010, the theme for the Emerging Leaders' Dialogue is "China's Rise and its Implications for Asia". An outline of the Dialogue is attached.

I am writing to request your assistance in identifying possible participants in this Dialogue from your university. Participants would be outstanding research higher degree students who are advanced in their PhD or research Masters program and who would be able to contribute to a Dialogue on "China's Rise and its Implications for Asia". Those students who have submitted in the previous twelve months would also be considered as candidates.

The Dialogue will involve a range of participants from three main geographical pools - Australia, China and the Asia-Pacific region outside China. We are seeking your assistance in identifying participants from these regions.

Participants in the Dialogue would be required to attend the event in Brisbane together with any meetings with government agencies and businesses that are arranged. Students will be involved in preparing a research paper for the Dialogue. Accommodation, a return economy flight and meals will be provided.

I invite you to nominate a small pool of potential candidates. In this regard please forward a summary of their thesis topic, an outline no more than one A4 page as to why they are suitable to attend this Dialogue, and a copy of the curriculum vitae. Candidates will then be chosen by Griffith University, in collaboration with Peking University. Nominations for participants close the 16 July 2010.
