【Course】Fri. at period 5, "Politics of World Trade"

Message from Mr. OSHIMA.

To prospective students of “Politics of World Trade”:

In anticipation of the first meeting of the class on April 8th Friday, I would like to advise those of you considering this course that I would like to modify the syllabus slightly.

The reasons for the changes include the dramatic change in the trade policy environment surrounding Japan resulting from the quake/tsunami disaster and the nuclear power plant crisis, as well as the mundane fact-of-life factor which is the need for me to be in Geneva for four weeks from mid-April forcing me to rearrange the class schedule.

As for the schedule, since I will need to set a number of make-up classes, I would like to warn you in advance that I plan to add a session on Friday the15th after the regular 5th period to continue on to the 6th period.

At these two sessions, I would like to ask the students to make the “country” reports originally planned for the fourth and the fifth sessions.

With respect to the country/entity assignments, I would like to add to the current list of 12 another two, first the “WTO (DG)” and second Switzerland.

The addition of the DG flows from the slight change I would like to introduce in the role-playing by the students, which I will explain further at the first meeting of the class.

This is also connected to assignments I would like to make to students for those four weeks I will be away. Once again the details will be spelled out later.

I would want to see you being well prepared when you come to class on Friday next, to be able to indicate your preference of assignment to country/entity out of 14 I now have listed.

The rule is that one cannot choose his/her home country (e.g. Japan will be represented by foreign students), you will need to indicate three in order of priority, and taking into account your preferences I will make necessary adjustments and inform you of the assignments asap so that you can prepare for your initial brief reports on the 15th.

Looking forward to seeing you in class,

Shotaro Oshima
