I came to the University of Tokyo for my SIPA-GraSPP double degree (D.D.). After almost one year staying here, I can certainly say that studying at GraSPP is one of the most memorable parts of my whole graduate life.
The D.D. program provides opportunities for students to study at best schools abroad, know people from other parts of the world and, most importantly, learn fresh ideas from different societies and cultures. In terms of the academics, education here is featured by both high academic level and impressive professional quality. I am interested in the realm of international development. As Japan and the U.S. are two of the most important global economies and aid-giving countries, educated in the two countries allows me studying the positive attributes of both an Asian leader and the western world. While training at SIPA has set a sound foundation for my major, education at GraSPP further expands my understanding of international political economy and aid policy both in theory and in the real world.
Japanese delicate culture also enriches my life. I come from Taiwan, and the cultural link between the two societies provides incentives to acquaint myself with this seemingly familiar but also exotic city. I have spent much time in places other than classrooms, and two things are admirable. First, efforts to preserve history and culture are impressive. I believe not only those designated cultural properties but also the concepts and actions of preservation and utilization themselves are the treasure of Japanese culture. Second, I am attracted toward the inspirational diligent Japanese attitude toward work. A common scene that people respect their duties in fact has embodied the remarkable value of pursuing perfection. Experiencing the culture and value of Japanese society brings me a different cultural baptism from both New York and Taipei.
After studying at GraSPP, I will resume my occupation in Parliament of my country. I am confident that the education at both Todai and Columbia University has broadened my horizons, sharpened my professional abilities and prepared me in mind, spirit and knowledge to improve my future career. The enlightenment, support and encouragement from the faculty and staff and the diverse student body of GraSPP are memorable in my life. Thank you all who teach and support me here.
