The Japanese economy has experienced several distinct phases of economic
development and growth: (1) high economic growth (10%) of 1950s and 1960s;
high inflation, 1972-75, in the wake of the first oil crisis of 1971;
moderate economic growth, 1975-85; the bubble in the second half of the
1980s; the stagnation (1% growth) and deflation in the 1990s-2006.
In 2008, the Japanese economy seems to have getting out of deflation and
stagnation. However, the fiscal debt has become unusually large for advanced
countries, and the interest rate has been lower than other countries.
The course will examine fundamental factors and economic policies that
explain these phases of economic growth and development. Several experiences
are quite unique to Japan, and others have been repeated by other countries.
