COURSE OVERVIEW

This case study, conducted in English, will focus on the role of the International Financial Institutions (IFIs), in particular, International Monetary Fund (IMF), the World Bank, and the Asian Development Bank, during the Asian financial crisis of 1997-98 and the 2007-09 global financial crises. The nature of the two crises, lessons learned from the Asian crisis, and IFIs’ responses to the two crises (how do they differ?) will be discussed and examined.

REQUIREMENTS

Students are required to form a group, to study as a group project, to make group presentations and to submit a final report. Communication skills as well as deepening knowledge will be emphasized. Regular attendance and class participation is important.

PREREQUISITE

The class is targeted to the first or second-year Masters Students at GraSPP with at least intermediate level of macroeconomics and microeconomics.Class materials, announcements, and others will be posted in Professor Ito’s Homepage: http://www.e.u-tokyo.ac.jp/~tito/index.htmlFor restricted-access materials, USER ID and PASSWORD will be given in the first class.

GRADING POLICY

Individual report: Students are required to write a report on a topic or a country of their interest related to financial crises. The report must be written in English but grammatical errors will not be penalized. References and data sources need to be included in the paper.
