Description

This course provides an overview of the political developments in 20th-century France. The two major changes in the country's political structure will be highlighted. From the 1930s to the 1960s, the transition from the parliamentary regime to the presidential one was accompanied by the swift social changes resulting from the efforts for economic modernisation . The recent waves of globalization and Europenization are increasingly "melting" away the bureaucratic supremacy, lasting core of the modern French polity. To explain these two processes, the experiences of the other Western European countries as well as of Japan will be referred.
