Course Description:

This course examines major themes in Japan ’s foreign policy. We will focus on topics such as security policy, external economic policy, United Nations policy, aid policy, and recognition of the past. The purpose of this course is to familiarize students with and deepen their understanding of the interrelation among the practical factors of policymaking (fundamental policy principles, historical constraints, the political process, public opinion, complex policy regulations, etc.).

Students will be required to read widely, participate in class discussion, and prepare policy papers for each topic covered.
