Tatsuya Sakashita (to Campus Asia International Summer School)

My close friends at GraSPP are going overseas to study in the winter semester. As I was discussing with them, I became eager to study abroad. One day, I found the information about recruiting participants for Campus-Asia International Summer School (ISS) program. I thought it was very good opportunity for me, and so I applied to join ISS program.

ISS was held at the Graduate school of International Studies (GSIS), Seoul National University, from August 1st to 13th 2012. We had classes from Monday to Thursday, field trips on Friday, and free time on the weekends. We took the final exam in the last class. Unfortunately, students from School of International Studies (SIS), Peking University could not join ISS program.

We took classes in the lecture hall. Professors from GraSPP, GSIS and SIS gave lectures on their specialized expertise, and there were question-and-answer period at the end of the classes. Lectures were easy to grasp and understand. However it was a pity that we did not have the chance to have discussions or do group work with GSIS students.

There were two field trips. We first went to Seoul city, and then we went to the demilitarized zone (DMZ).

DMZ was impressive. I could see North Korea’s scenery that I had seen only on the video footages. DMZ is a deep forest of 4 km in width, left untouched for 50 years after the war because armistices ban anyone from entering there. At the Joint Security Area I saw the armistice line and felt the tension and reality of the world’s only country with a divided peninsula. However, the thought that the DMZ is also one of the main sightseeing areas in Korea gave me a very mixed feeling.

As I joined ISS program, I realized I did not have enough knowledge about Korea. On one hand, Korean (GSIS) students have studied very well about Japan-Korea history and relations. On the other hand, I think we Japanese have not studied so much about this issue. I think it is a first step for mutual understanding to know each other.

It was first time for me to visit South Korea, and I have got a favorable impression. Seoul is a very convenient and comfortable city. Actually, we had much easier internet access in Korea than in Japan. Above all, the Korean people were very kind to us.

I greatly appreciate the support from GSIS professors, staffs, and students, especially to the teaching assistant student who devoted herself to assist us. Thanks to her, we had a great experience in Seoul. When GSIS students visit Tokyo, we hope to treat them in a very similar manner. And I also express my thanks to GraSPP staff for offering me such a precious opportunity.

I think Campus-Asia program is one of the best opportunities to extend one’s knowledge, and I highly recommend students who take interest in this program to join ISS program.

阪下竜也 (to Campus Asia International Summer School)

Campus Asia
