UMBI | Funds for Planting in Indonesia: Digital Wallets Feature for Reforestation in Indonesia

By Yee-Sol CHANG, Rachel HO, Itsuki SHIMOOSAKO, Xuemeng YAO

Our proposed in-app feature UMBI will enable digital wallet platforms to contribute to Indonesia’s ongoing reforestation efforts. Building on successful models from China and the Philippines while leveraging high internet penetration and digital wallet adoption in Indonesia, our gamified feature allows users to donate unused rewards points towards planting trees in designated areas. It is financed through a combination of international funds for reforestation, green loans and government budgeting to ensure sustainable funding for long-term impact. The proposal includes incentives for all stakeholders, including local residents, and ensures speed and transparency, thereby avoiding conventional issues of corruption and efficiency. UMBI will therefore foster public awareness, sustainable business practices and the furthering of Indonesia’s reforestation, biodiversity and climate goals.
