Macroeconomics in the real world: A view from the IMF (5130280) | June 6-July 16, 2019 Time:            Period 2 (10:25-12:10) on Tuesday/Thursday Location:      Seminar Room E (1222E), 12th floor, International Academic Research Building Instructors:  Jerald Schiff, Part-time lecturer (main instructor)                       Toshiro Nishizawa, Professor Credits:         2 credits Language:    English Category:      Practical training Office hours: 13:30-15:30 on Tuesday/Thursday or by appointment Inquiry:        tnishizawa@pp.u-tokyo.ac.jp | 03-5841-1343 This course will provide an overview of the work undertaken at the IMF, and the framework used there to analyze macroeconomic issues and policies. Lectures will focus on designing fiscal, monetary, and exchange rate policies and avoiding or dealing with economic crises. Case studies will be used to illustrate general principles. Course grades will be based equally on three assignments: (i) a student presentation on a macroeconomic policy of their choosing; (ii) a policy memo; and (iii) one-on-one mock IMF job interview. The class will start on Thursday, June 6. The first eight classes will primarily be lectures, although ample opportunity will be provided for discussion. Class 6, on policy writing, will include an in-class practice exercise, followed by feedback. Classes 9 and 10 (and 11 if necessary) will consist of presentations by each student. Class 11 will be open for students to consult with the professor on their policy notes and practice for the final interviews. The last day (Classes 12 and 13) will be comprised of extended office hours and the mock job interviews. Policy memos will be due by the end of the day. Students are encouraged to participate in GraSPP Research Seminar (A “very good crisis”? —The IMF, the Global Financial Crisis and Implications for Reform) on Thursday, June 27. About the main instructor: Jerald “Jerry” SCHIFF retired from the International Monetary Fund in 2015. He last served as Deputy Director of the Asia and Pacific Department, where he led the institution’s work on India, Korea, Myanmar, Singapore and Japan. He served in a number of other positions at the IMF, including Senior Advisor in the Office of the Managing Director, and as Division Chief in the European Department, where he led the IMF’s work on several Eastern European countries. Jerry is an Adjunct Professorial Lecturer at American University and has spent several semesters as a Lecturer at the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy. He has also served as a consultant to the IMF’s Institute for Capacity Development, helping to design and teach classes to country officials.

– WB scholars will be able to apply for unpaid internship only. – IMF scholars must receive the approval from their sponsoring agency and university before they apply for unpaid internships. 

  Selection Interview

 Selection Interview with faculty members will be arranged in mid-June and GraSPP will recommend the shortlisted applicants to each institution for the final selection. The result will be announced by email from the International Affairs Office.
