GraSPP Research Seminar: “When Diplomacy Travels Home: How Leaders’ Foreign Trips Affect Public Opinion” December 23, 2025

GraSPP Research Seminar

Date:

December 23, 10:00-11:00

Venue:

Lecture Hall B, 4th floor

Format:

In person (University personnel only)

Outline:

Leaders’ foreign travel consumes considerable time and public resources, yet its political effects remain poorly understood. Such trips are often assumed to boost domestic popularity, but evidence is scarce—especially outside the U.S. Using experimental data from Japan, this study examines how overseas trips influence public opinion, providing one of the first systematic insights into the trade-offs and value of international engagement.

Speaker:

Dr. Shoko Kohama, Associate Professor, Public Policy School, Hokkaido University
