Wanling Song
One year ago, I finished my study at Seoul National University as an exchange student, and was looking forward to my new life as a double-degree student at the University of Tokyo. However, the sudden and unexpected global pandemic brought big changes to the whole world, and also prevented international students like me from going to Japan. Although I could only be a student of UTokyo online, I do enjoy this unique experience and have received full of entertainment. With regret deeply in my heart, I do have a faster improvement in academic study, a better understanding of Northeast Asia cultures, and a deeper friendship with CAMPUS Asia family members through studying online at UTokyo.
Unlike the relatively familiar curriculum, learning mode, and classroom atmosphere at Peking University, the online study experience at UTokyo is both novel and challenging. On the one hand, an all-English learning environment, intensive course assignments, a classroom entirely composed of international students, and a teaching mode that emphasizes personal thinking as well as collision of thinking all set higher requirements for me to successfully adapt to the new learning rhythm. On the other hand, the advantages and disadvantages of online classes took both the professors and students more time to adapt to and get the most use of this way of new learning. I did enjoy the convenience of ZOOM, including saving time going to school, easily conducting breakout sessions during classes, raising questions, and sharing opinions anytime by chat box, etc. However, I did also miss offline classes where we could meet each other face-to-face.
In addition to theoretical knowledge, studying public policy at GraSPP also offered me a lot of practical skills. The classes at GraSPP, especially the case study classes, not only offered essential economic and financial knowledge in policy-making but also helped us to learn how to use the knowledge that we have learned in real cases. By taking classes like Writing Public Policy for SDGs, with independent learning, in-depth analysis, and cooperative discussion during the course, I have further improved my learning, research as well as communication skills and gained a better understanding of policies in real life. The CAMPUS Asia Joint Course and various kinds of online meetings organized by GraSPP also offered me chances to work with and learn from others. During the 1st semester in UTokyo, the students of the CAMPUS Asia program all took the CAMPUS Asia Joint Course, where we discussed various topics including economics, politics, and social issues of Northeast Asia, and learned from different professors of UTokyo, SNU and PKU. Besides, I also worked with another 3 students from Korea, Japan and Nepal to present our research about East Asian Regionalism. Owing to those comparative studies in various topics of CJK, I learned a lot about the similarities and differences between these three countries.
In order to understand more about Japanese culture, I also took Japanese courses. Although this is also my first time studying language online, the teacher organized the class quite well and I really enjoyed both learning and practicing with other students through ZOOM. For Chinese students, Japanese learning is not so difficult and full of fun. Learning Japanese puts me in a lively social scene, which has deepened my comprehensive understanding of Japanese culture. In China, when I see Japanese words on street signs or product packaging, I can still pronounce them in Japanese naturally. The experience of learning and speaking Japanese made me feel more deeply that language is an essential tool for understanding culture.
Intercultural communication does not always mean shock and challenge, but means enhancing mutual trust and harvesting friendship. The friendship with my CAMPUS Asia family members is the most valuable gift I got by studying at UTokyo. Whether in class discussions or meetings of the CAMPUS Asia Program, international students from all over the world, especially from China, Japan and South Korea, always showed the greatest goodwill and openness to share knowledge and inspire each other, which helped a lot to resolve misunderstandings and bridge differences. Sometimes different ways of thinking and cultural identity are more enlightening to the discussion on cooperation and social issues of China, Japan, and South Korea. Although one year is quite short, it is enough to form the deepest emotional connection. Some of us have not only studied together at UTokyo but also studied together at SNU as well as PKU. It was a great pity that we couldn't meet each other offline during the past year, but we could still keep in touch through online classes and activities at UTokyo.
Two years and a half ago, I was extremely happy to become a double degree student of the CAMPUS Asia Program. Although changes happened last year, I still finished my study online. The experience at UTokyo helped me in various fields, including academic study, intercultural understanding, and friendship establishment. This unique experience not only satisfied my interests in regional studies and intercultural communication, but also improved my skills and ability including academic skills and practical skills. Besides, the friendship I gained from this program will be my lifetime treasure. Although it’s quite regretful that I could not really be in UTokyo during this year, I believe my one-year online experience at UTokyo is obviously not the end but the starting point for me to start more intercultural communications with a richer experience, a more open vision, and stronger capacity.
Thank you for all the help and kindness. And I am still looking forward to my trip to Japan in the future.

Before the beginning of the semester I have always been interested in cultural exchange and intellectual discussion with people of various backgrounds, and the CAMPUS Asia program (CAP) was the best program to find both of them. As I already befriended students from the University of Tokyo during my stay with them in Beijing, I really looked forward to visiting Tokyo and having my life there for an exchange semester. The administration and program officers were very kind and helpful throughout the process of registration and preparation for the new semester. I applied for a dorm room, received the required documents for a visa, and packed myself with necessities with the help of the officers.
Taking the online courses Then came COVID-19, however, and I could not visit Tokyo in person due to the travel restrictions and the concerns of my family. Instead, I started attending online courses. I felt sad about not being able to travel around Tokyo and other cities in Japan and to see my friends in Tokyo. It was a little frustrating to figure out how to register for the courses online and how to go through the administration process online, as I cannot receive personal advice from the advisers, officers, and fellow students. Nevertheless, all CAP students could finally and successfully go through all the processes with timely assistance and email replies from the advisers and officers. I sincerely appreciate such help. While some may be skeptical about the efficiency and effectiveness of online courses, I could learn and practice the course materials and contents as much as I would have taken offline courses. The online Zoom platform was very proper to use for lectures, presentations, and discussions. Both professors and students were very passionate about making the best out of the situation and utilized the Zoom platform, materials, and other devices to process lectures, presentations, discussions, team meetings, and even written exams. I was really surprised at how the econometrics exam could be held online with students actively participating in the exam session and uploading their scanned answers, while the professor and assistants readily evaluated and provided feedback. Also, I was very touched by all the passionate students across the world actively and sincerely participating in the team meetings for group presentations. I was very proud to have and share such experiences with competitive and passionate members in CAP, and the University of Tokyo.
After the end of the semester As a final remark, I sincerely appreciated all the experiences through online coursework this semester, with the help of and interactions with passionate people. Although we could not meet in person this semester, I felt all students from CAP and the University of Tokyo were very passionate about actively exchanging our experiences and ideas. I only regret that I could not enjoy the full CAP experience this semester but that was only due to COVID-19. In this sense, I would appreciate more invitations from CAP to further discussions and activities even after this semester, and after the end of COVID-19. I feel that many other students with whom I had classes, discussions, and group projects would share the same feeling with me. I hope CAP can have further discussion sessions and projects in the future and would like to join those. I thank all the officers, professors, and classmates for their kind guidance and assistance throughout the program.

Juan Rufino Morga Reyes
In my seven years with the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (Central Bank of the Philippines), I have come to realize that I need to continuously strive to become better - not just as a person but as a civil servant and an economist. One of the ways I thought of doing to make sure that this realization comes true is by pursuing further studies abroad.
I believe for the most part that studying abroad would broaden my perspective in life and in my career. Having been in my home country most of my life, I craved to see what the outside world looks like so to speak. Questions like “How is it like studying elsewhere?”, “Will I get accepted? and “Will I be able to finish the program?” crossed my mind as I try to think about whether or not I should go ahead and send out my scholarship application with the prestigious Joint Japan/World Bank Graduate Scholarship Program (JJ/WBGSP). Aside from this, the fact that living in a foreign land for two years without my family and friends was likewise daunting.
Indeed, getting out of my comfort zone can be frightening but it was by far the best decision I have ever made. Thankfully, I got accepted at The University of Tokyo, Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP). I took it as a positive sign and I immediately recognized that this is my first step in achieving my earnest aspiration of becoming a future leader and expert in the field of economics and public policy. Despite having an undergraduate degree in economics and a post-graduate degree in development policy in the Philippines, I tend to understand various macroeconomic issues conventionally. But with the guidance from renowned professors coupled with an effective curriculum under the Master of Public Policy, International Program (MPP/IP), my conceptual and analytical skills in conducting comprehensive studies in the recent trends and development policies in the global economy was harnessed and I have also gained confidence in assimilating theoretical economics and doing policy research.
GraSPP likewise allowed me to further discover myself. With classmates from different countries and multiple backgrounds, I learned how to get along with them, appreciate cultural diversity, and become a good listener. In terms of living in Japan, I love their food particularly ramen or tsukemen and the four seasons, particularly autumn, since we do not get to experience these back in the Philippines. The people are likewise friendly and helpful, which makes Japan a perfect place to study for international students like me.
When I return to the Philippines, I am eager to apply the learnings I had here to the current and future objectives of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. If opportunities arise, I would also like to support and teach students to appreciate and love data science in economic research.
