Important notice for scholarship recipients a) World Bank scholars are only allowed to apply for unpaid internship and need to notify to the World Bank by sending information on the internship to JJ/WBGSP email address. b) ADB scholars need to notify to the ADB by a letter with information on the internship through GraSPP Office before applying for the internship and obtain permission from the ADB first. c) IMF scholars are only allowed to apply for unpaid internship with approval both from their sponsoring agency and GraSPP before application. d) JDS scholars need to consult with JICE for the procedure before starting internship. 4. Selection The institution will be notified only of applicants shortlisted after the screening by GraSPP. The result will be notified individually by e-mail from GraSPP Office. 5. A2 Intensive: Case Study (International Field Workshop) (5140730-2/5179004-2) November 12, 2020The International Field Workshop (IFW) will move to a virtual format this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The overarching theme is “Strategic foresight in addressing public policy challenges beyond the COVID-19 pandemic.”
The number of students allowed to participate will be limited to about 10 due to the nature of the course involving a series of intensive discussion with professionals at our counterpart organizations. A pre-registration screening will be conducted before registration (A2 course registration period: November 26-December 2).
GraSPP Office will take care of registration for those who are allowed to register—students cannot register via UTAS by themselves. If the registration period with your school is different from GraSPP’s, please seek permission from your school office for registering in this course outside your school’s registration period.
The field workshop is tentatively scheduled to take place during a period from Tuesday, February 23 to Saturday, March 13, 2021 (Tokyo time) with a series of virtual meetings with professionals at our counterpart organizations located in the United States. Due to time difference, we will have virtual meetings only during either very early morning or mid-night hours (Tokyo time). Students willing to register for this course are required to (a) choose one of the tentative target organizations listed above, (b) search the organization’s website to identify a topic (or topics) of your interest as well as a unit (or units, or professionals) responsible for the topic, (c) write a proposal to define issues to discuss in the context of “Strategic foresight in addressing public policy challenges beyond the COVID-19 pandemic” and to explain the motivation behind (not more than 300 words), and (d) submit your proposal together with your CV in a sub-folder titled “IFW 2020A2 Student Proposal” in the shared Google Drive folder <URL is available on UTAS> by noon on Wednesday, November 25, 2020. The file you submit should have your name and student number in its title. When you prepare a proposal, please take a look at Reference Materials available in the shared Google Drive folder <URL is available on UTAS>.To help students better understand the course and pre-registration screening before registration, two identical information sessions will take place on Wednesday, November 18 (12:30-13:00 and 19:00-19:30, Tokyo time) via Zoom. Please do not count credits for this course to satisfy your completion requirements if you plan to graduate in March 2021.

Before joining GraSPP, the question that came to my mind was whether I could make a change if I pursued this program. Was it worth it to spend two years in another country where I am not familiar with anything at all? It seemed to be a natural question for a person to compare costs and benefits before making a decision. At that time, I would say I just wanted to escape from my workload to enjoy a long holiday in Japan. When I enrolled in GraSPP, things changed. My priority was studying. At first, I just wanted to pass and receive my degree, and that was it for me. However, as time passed, I just wanted to do better in my classes. There were many competitive students at GraSPP, so my first learning experience was to be competitive in a sense. I made a new goal to upgrade my skills and knowledge. There were many things to learn, but the most important thing for me was that I found something that I was interested in. GraSPP provided a friendly environment for studying. I learned that being ready would give you an advantage, so a strategy was the matter. Although to pass an exam was not so difficult, it was competitive to get a good grade. Assessing the impact of GraSPP on my career and knowledge is quite a tricky question, but it is worth looking at. It is too early to evaluate whether GraSPP has any impact on my career. In terms of knowledge, it is another matter. I do feel equipped with additional understanding of economics-related topics. GraSPP is not just a policy department. It has a mixed curriculum with other fields of study such as economics, law, engineering, etc., so you can explore what you are good at. What I learned at GraSPP became a useful tool for analyzing the macroeconomic performance of my country. I became more confident when discussing with macroeconomists who are working on my country such as IMF, ADB, World Bank, and so on. It is not that difficult to graduate from GraSPP; however, it is a better place to discover yourself. I do not think I am the best candidate at GraSPP since there are many potential candidates, and they are better than me in terms of education. Apart from being competitive, I think we are helping each other to grow. Students do not talk to each other much at GraSPP from my perspective; however, if you are willing to start a conversation, you will be able to make a lot of friends, and they are helpful. Specifically, if you are a foreign student, please try to make friends with Japanese students. They are nice and willing to help you, although they may be reluctant to talk to you at first. So, I would like to recommend GraSPP as a place to discover your potential related to public policy.
