Selected students from GraSPP were invited to participate in a training program which addressed the challenges faced by public sector leaders in fostering economic growth through infrastructure development. The program from June 23-28, 2019 was jointly delivered by Asian Development Bank Institute (ADBI) and the Leadership Academy for Development (LAD) at Stanford University. Six mid-career students from GraSPP joined government officials from countries across Asia and the Pacific and ADB’s infrastructure experts.
The program featured case studies and group exercises on providing public goods in politically charged environments. Dr. Francis Fukuyama, Director and Senior Fellow from LAD, started the program by giving an introductory lecture on a framework for public policy problem-solving. At Stanford, Dr. Fukuyama is Olivier Nomellini Senior Fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies (FSI), and the Mosbacher Director of FSI’s Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law as well as professor (by courtesy) of political science. Mr. Michael Bennon, Managing Director at Stanford Global Projects Center, and Mr. Chul Ju Kim, Deputy Dean at ADBI, guided and facilitated discussions throughout the entire week of the program.
GraSPP and ADBI signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) in June 2018 in pursuit of a strategic partnership to enhance knowledge sharing and joint research activities of mutual interest. ADBI was ranked world’s second-best government-affiliated think tank in the 2017 Global Go To Think Tank Index Report published by the Lauder Institute of the University of Pennsylvania. ADBI was also ranked second among regional studies centers, and seventh among international development think tanks. ADBI has been providing intellectual input for policy makers in the Asian Development Bank’s developing member countries since its creation in 1997.
