Important notice for scholarship recipients a) World Bank scholars are only allowed to apply for unpaid internship and need to notify to the World Bank by sending information on the internship to JJ/WBGSP email address. b) ADB scholars need to notify to the ADB by a letter with information on the internship through GraSPP Office before applying for the internship and obtain permission from the ADB first. c) IMF scholars are only allowed to apply for unpaid internship with approval both from their sponsoring agency and GraSPP before application. d) JDS scholars need to consult with JICE for the procedure before starting internship. 4. Selection interview Selection interview by faculty members will be arranged in the end of June. Each host institution will be notified only of applicants shortlisted after the interview as recommended candidates for final selection. The lecture on June 10, for the course of "Law and Public Policy" is canceled.

Dear fellow members of GraSPP community, The past few months have proved to be an extremely difficult time for many of us. From high unemployment rates to economic uncertainty, the intersection of multiple challenges during the COVID-19 crisis has affected various aspects of everyday life in many parts of the world. The widespread school closures, including at Columbia University where I have been working on my double-degree program, were one of the many changes that greatly impacted my life. [caption id="attachment_25378" align="alignright" width="315"] Momori and her classmates presenting their capstone project to the client over zoom[/caption] We had to sacrifice our classroom environments and gradually adjust to zoom-online classes so that we could oblige to the appropriate social distancing measures. After months of government-ordered lockdowns, I began to feel isolated, helpless, and lonely. The physical absence of our professors and fellow students made me fear that I would no longer be able to gain the full experience I envisioned in graduate school. However, I soon realized that I was wrong. The professors have consistently shown their best efforts in ensuring that students were receiving the best quality education that they could offer. The students united and supported one another through our spirit of shared sacrifice. Throughout the toughest times, I began to feel truly connected and supported even when I had been physically isolated from my peers. I carry my deepest appreciation for my Columbia community and commend their extraordinary commitment to solidarity during these unprecedented times. [caption id="attachment_25376" align="alignleft" width="225"] The daily 7pm cheering and clapping for frontline and essential workers[/caption] As a double-degree student sent from GraSPP to SIPA, I was always aware of the striking social segregation in the United States. But the COVID-19 crisis made inequality among different communities more visible. Although I am moving back to Japan and returning to GraSPP in July before the official completion of my double-degree program, it is my duty to continue to support my peers and the vulnerable communities in any way, shape, or form. I encourage you to do the same. There is no doubt that the current reality is a hard one to face. This year has taken an unexpected turn for all of us and has changed the way we go about our daily lives. As the Class of 2020, we will now miss our final goodbyes, our final commencement, and our final celebration for some of our greatest accomplishments. These special moments were taken away unexpectedly, and to some, unfairly. However, I urge us all to remember that we will always have one thing in common: the strengthened interpersonal bonds that have formed from persevering through these unprecedented challenges together. Through the power of social media and technology, we are able to connect with the world to continuously support one another no matter where we are. In these increasingly challenging times, I hope you will step into the future with even more passion, vision, and purpose to serve the communities in need. Sincerely, Momori Hirabayashi

During winter 2020 I was selected to be an intern at Music Securities Inc., one of the leading companies and innovators in the crowdfunding and securities market at the beginning of the century. I had the privilege to collaborate actively for two months, which was enriching and revealing in different aspects of my professional and personal life in this country. During my first day, I was warmly received by Music Securities’ staff. They explained the main activities and different sectors the company is involved in alongside how the financial instruments they provide work. Subsequently, I was presented in front of the whole team and the board of directors, who gladly offered me their help, assistance and guidance during these two months. Due to the company’s dynamic nature, I was quickly designated to the sales team, allowing me not only to collaborate, but also to be fully involved in one of their projects. My superiors were glad to share their expertise with me, allowing me to interact with most of the departments of the company, while providing me with the knowledge to develop a full proposal. The project consisted of developing a draft for a proposal to compete for funds in the USAID/IDB Lab initiative “BetterTogether Challenge,” which aims to support the millions of refugees who have fled Venezuela in recent years due to the severe economic decline and political constraints. I received the guidelines to elaborate the proposal and the vision the company aimed to achieve: Fusing blockchain and music as a mechanism to level up the income of hundreds of displaced musicians from Venezuela and as a support for the heavily eroded morale for their refugee community. Through weeks of development and assistance from the sales team, we completed the preliminary draft upon which the final proposal will be based. However, current times provided harsher conditions due to the spread of today’s pandemic, and further activities were suddenly halted two weeks early. Fortunately, I was able to still participate and interact with a variety of departments within the company, including the legal team, analyzing and translating reforms and decrees in Peru; the web design team, developing new ideas and offering feedback on current content; and most importantly the sales team, who I worked together with to develop the initial steps of a project aimed to improve the conditions of a vulnerable sector in Latin America. Being an intern in Music Securities allowed me to understand the nature of the crowdfunding sector in Japan, and I experienced firsthand how it is to be involved in it. As my first time being an intern, I am really thankful for the opportunity it provided me to improve my knowledge and abilities in fields and topics such as: the refugee crisis, the development of proposals for public grants, and the complex nature of social issues in the developing world and how to address them. I value this opportunity as an eye-opening experience for my professional future.
