International Workshop on “Climate Change and Sustainable Development; Public Health and Policy” (Tokyo, 11 October 2019) / 国際ワークショップ「気候変動と持続可能な発展ー公衆衛生と政策」(2019年10月11日@東大)
International Workshop on “Climate Change and Sustainable Development; Public Health and Policy” (Tokyo, 11 October 2019) This is an announcement about International Workshop on “Climate Change and Sustainable Development; Public Health and Policy” to be held on 11 October 2019. Climate change has been set as one of core policy discussion themes in the Sustainable Development Goals. Specifically, SDG.13 requires urgent action taken to combat climate change and its impact. However, after Paris Agreement in COP21 in November 2015, followed by Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Special Report 2018, policy discussion still suffers from conflict of interests across diverse policy sectors, and unsettled proposal for effective measures to achieve the goal with taking a balance between the cost and benefit among stakeholders. The discussion will be continued in the UN Climate Action Summit 2019 this September. Indeed, the impact range is diverse; health impact by direct (extreme weather) and indirect (through natural systems such as malaria and wildfires) exposures. The impacts are mediated by public health capability and adaptation and disproportionately more crucial to socioeconomically more vulnerable people. What could be done? Who will be the central player to lead the discussion? Can the current structure of policy governance overcome the challenge ahead? Could we do better otherwise? In this context, under the theme "Climate Change and Sustainable Development; Public Health and Policy," this workshop will provide an initial step in developing an interdisciplinary discussion between the University of Tokyo and Seoul National University on the global policy challenge for environmental sustainability. 【Information】 Date: Tokyo, 11 October 2019, 14:00-17:00 Venue: Faculty of Medicine Experimental Research Bldg 医学教育研究棟 (Faculty of Medicine Bldg. 1). 13F, Seminar room 6, The University of Tokyo, Hongo Campus https://www.u-tokyo.ac.jp/campusmap/cam01_02_09_j.html Theme: Climate Change and Sustainable Development; Public Health and Policy Language: English 【Schedule】 (13:45-14:00) Registration 14:00-14:10 Opening Remarks: Naoto Sekimura (Vice President, Professor at the Department of Nuclear Engineering and Management, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo ) <Moderator> Hideki Hashimoto (Professor, Departments of Health and Social Behavior, The University of Tokyo) 14:10-15:25 <Session 1> Kim Ho (Professor, Dean, Graduate School of Public Health, Seoul National University) Yukari Takamura (Professor, Institute for Future Initiatives, The University of Tokyo) 15:25-15:35 Break 15:35-16:50 <Session 2> Jong Ho Hong (Professor of Economics, Dean, Graduate School of Environmental Studies, Seoul National University) Hideaki Shiroyama (Professor, Graduate Schools for Law and Politics, Graduate School of Public Policy, The University of Tokyo) 16:50-17:00 Closing remarks, Group photo 【Registration】 Please fill out the form below to register by Oct 9th https://forms.gle/CRZu3JsKYpcK36nJA If you have any questions, please contact us below.
