GraSPP, JICA Laos Office and National University of Laos jointly hosted a workshop titled “Dialogue on Sustainable Development Paths for Laos—Implications for Fiscal Stabilization” on February 1, 2019 in Vientiane. A number of academics and practitioners joined the workshop to contribute to “Joint Policy Research and Dialogue Program for Fiscal Stabilization in Lao PDR” initiated by the governments of Japan and Laos in March 2018. Issues discussed were challenges to the promotion of micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs), sustainable infrastructure development and the potential role of innovative finance. Prof. Sengchanh Chanthasene and Prof. Phouphet Kyophilavong from Faculty of Economics and Business Management of National University of Laos led the discussion from the Lao side while Prof. Toshiro Nishizawa served as a moderator of the sessions. Key participants were a number of government officials and experts, including Dr. Phetkeo Poumanyvong from National Institute for Economic Research (NIER) and Mr. Hideyuki Matsui, a JICA expert to the Ministry of Finance of Laos.
