Students from GraSPP joined young leaders from the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member economies in mid-November in Bangkok, the capital city of Thailand. The APEC Voices of the Future (APEC VOF) is a unique program to provide youth from the 21 economies across the Pacific Rim with various opportunities for dialogue with business leaders and policymakers during the APEC CEO Summit and APEC Leaders’ Week. Ms. Yumiko Yamaguchi and Ms. Kaori Hori teamed up to represent Japan at the APEC VOF, joined by Ms. Momori Hirabayashi, a GraSPP alumna living in Bangkok, who represented Japan with her peers in 2018.

Before their departure, the team visited the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and APEC Business Advisory Council (ABAC), the private-sector arm of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation. They learned the opportunities and challenges surrounding APEC economies and sought guidance for the team’s successful contribution to the youth dialogue.

On October 14 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Shoichi Nagayoshi from the APEC Division of Economic Affairs Bureau spared their time to brief the team members on the APEC agenda for this year.

On October 26 at ABAC, Messrs. Eiichiro Otsuka and Daisuke Nishio gave the team members an overview of the role of the ABAC in the APEC Leaders’ consultation. They provided advice for the team’s expected contribution to the dialogue.

Ms. Yumiko Yamaguchi and Ms. Kaori Hori report their unique experiences and illustrate how they contributed to the dialogue.
